Boys to Men: Raising Children to Understand the Times and Know What to Do:
May 06, 2014
1 Chronicles 12:32 states that the children of Issachar were men who understood the times and knew what they ought to do. Raising a child has become so much more to me than having my children read the Bible, it's been about having them make their faith their own.
Before Marvin and I made a commitment to the Navigators, we talked with our three sons about the call that the Lord placed on our hearts. At that moment we decided that our ministry would be a family ministry.
Many Nav staff have seen our boys at conferences (sometimes toting school books) and have embraced their presence. Our boys have grown up in ministry and have always heard and learned about discipleship, accountability, The Wheel, The Bridge, The Truth Truck, the Heart Onion, and many other ministry tools. While it's true that these tools are all just good "information," I'm grateful for the influence that other Navigators have had in my boys' lives.
Raising a child has become so much more to me than having my children read the Bible or even know how to share ministry illustrations; it's been about having them make their faith their own. My prayer has always been that when the rubber meets the road, they will know to draw upon the truths that they've heard while growing up; but more importantly, I've always prayed that my boys would have a personal relationship with God--something more than just an every Sunday, church relationship.
